A brief History on Boats

Steam boats were coming to fruition in the States about this time and by 1840 a steamship could make twice the amount of trips between America and Europe than a sail boat could in the same time. The clipper ship was by then the fastest commercial sailing ship.

The diesel engine of today has outstripped steam with its economy and reliability, while the use of nuclear power in ships is confined to military vessels. Eventually, large ocean liners provided the means for intercontinental passenger travel until the advent of the jet airliner; however, diesel-powered vessels still perform vital passenger and cargo services.

Roll-on/roll-off container ships take entire articulated lorries, with their trailers and these are good for short runs, such as across the English Channel between Britain and France.

The large, ocean-going container ships of today are very cost effective compared with the conventional ship, where loading is more time consuming. Container ships are totally open and are easily loaded at the docks, perhaps five times faster and at a fraction of the cost of a conventional ship. This gives a much faster turn-round time.
